INDONESIA

Indonesia is the ultimate surfer's paradise with thousands of islands to choose from. Certain areas are just starting to be explored for surf.

Indonesia can be split into two main regions for surfers - those with surf: Bali, G-Land (Grajagan), Java, Lombok, Mentawai Islands, Nias, Sumatra, Sumba, Sumbawa, Timor - and those with little or no surf potential: Borneo, Irian Jaya, Sonde and Moluques Islands.

Indonesia has a tropical climate with two seasons that are influenced by the surrounding seas and determined by the monsoons. The dry season is from June to October and the monsoon (wet) season is from November to March. Relative humidity averages 80% all year round and thunderstorms are frequent. Average annual temperature ranges in Jakarta are from 23 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius all year. Generally the best time of year to surf Indonesia is during the dry season from March to November. This is when the trade winds are blowing offshore.

Indonesia has become somewhat unstable politically since 1999. Check your intended destination carefully before going: in general there are no problems for Bali, but this is not the case for Timor or Moluques.

G-Land is one of the longest and most perfect left-handers in the world. Officially known as Grajagan, G-Land is situated on the south-eastern tip of Java. G-Land is for experienced wave riders with just one thing in mind - surfing. Thick jungle surrounds the camp, which is part of a huge National Park - guaranteed to encounter some exotic wildlife! Travel to Grajagan is overland from Bali to Gilamanuk, where you catch the car ferry to Java, then its on by road to Grajagan Village. From the Village you board a powerboat for a ride across the bay to the camp.

G-land is rated one of the best left-handers in the world. When all 3 sections - Kong's, Money Trees and Speedies - link up, you'll experience one of the longest, most exhilarating waves you have ever surfed. You can pull into incredibly long barrels or race and carve the perfect walls. Best of all G-land is ultra consistent - rideable even in small swells. When it's big, its simply awesome.

Weather: Indonesia has a tropical climate being just located above the equator. Temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius all year round. The wet season occurs October to March, and as with all tropical climates the humidity at this time can be oppressive. The dry season occurs from April to September, with less humid conditions and sunnier weather. This is usually the most popular time to travel to Indo. Most rainfall in Bali will occur during the wet season, but downpours are typical and can occur at anytime, usually not lasting too long.
