SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka is made up of thousands of kilometres of beautiful white sandy beaches
with tropical blue warm water, and is still relatively untouched by tourism. Untouched by tourism usually means
less crowds in the water, so it can be a virtual surfers paradise! Sri Lanka offers you, the traveller, not
only the opportunity to surf, but also a vast array of culture, shopping, adventure and relaxation. Whilst in
Sri Lanka why not check out the European structure and atmosphere of Kandy, or the many National Parks where
spotting elephants, leopards, and other animals is not uncommon! Sri Lanka is definitely a destination worth
seeing and travelling to - nowhere else in the world offers such a diverse destination that still remains untouched.
Sounds good? Then pack your boards, and your sense of adventure and away you go.
Sri Lanka was one of the worst hit countries in the Tsunami and by no account did
they get off lightly. Both Hikkaduwa and Aragum Bay, the areas most frequented by surfers, were ravished by
this freak natural disaster, not to mention the small townships and villages all along the Sri Lankan Coast
line. Like most Australians you have read or heard of stories from tourists who were in these areas at the time,
as many of these stories of survival have been relayed through different surfing publications and the Australian
Media. From our latest report we can happily advise that most hotels in the Hikkaduwa region are now open again
for business, and that life is slowly returning to normal. Tourists have started to return, including many of
those who were there when the Tsunami occurred. Surf conditions in this area normally are best from October
through to March.
The surf in Sri Lanka is located between the southwest and the southeast regions
of the country. There are a variety of beach breaks, coral and rock reefs, river mouths and point breaks. The
two renown areas for surf are Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay, and the areas are at opposite sides of the surf region
and get their best surf at different times. The Hikkaduwa region gets the best surf during its dry season, November
to March, and the Arugam Bay area is best from March to October. Between the two areas, there is surf in Sri
Lanka all year round!
