Located northeast of the Society Islands and comprised of 78 "low" islands covering over 12,000 square miles, the Tuamotu Atolls are the largest chain of coral atolls in the world and one of the last great frontiers in surf travel.
Each atoll is a tiny paradise of palm-laden coral beaches and motu (islets) rising just several feet above sea level... dotted with small villages where the simple Polynesian lifestyle and clear-blue lagoons beckon to surfers, romantics and divers alike. The surf is world class and uncrowded. Four of the atolls feature tourist-class properties.
International Airport: Papeete
Best months for surf in this area are August through to the beginning of November when the island gets the most typhoon swells and the best winds. During May, June, and July, the surf is generally smaller. From December to April the winds are often strong and cross shore but the swell is always pretty big and some surfers prefer this time of year.
The reef at Cloud 9 sits right on the edge of the Philippine Deep. At The peak, it's about five feet deep over coral reef. A hundred yards out it's more than 300 feet deep. And just over a mile out its more than 30,000 feet deep - deeper than Mt. Everest is tall. That's a bigger, more drastic change in depth than at Teahupoo. It's a change of depth so abrupt that the wedge of reef at Cloud 9 surges with surf on the smallest ripple of swell, pitching them out into transparent blue barrels.
BREAKS
Cloud 9 is situated directly in front of Sagana Resort, no boats needed. The wave is a great right hander that can be both fun and challenging. Although relatively short wave, the fact that it barrels nearly the whole way guarantees satisfaction.
Jacking Horse: fickle right hander that can be really fun on its day but when small is a great wave for beginners.
Tuason Left: Considered as the best left on the island. Hollow and shallow and only good over 3 feet. Beginners need not apply.
Rock Island (Tuesday Rock): Long fun right hander about a 10min boat ride from Sagana Resort.
Stimpies: World class left hander, also 10min from Sagana Resort. This spot is Epic. Big or Small Stimpies is what you picture when dreaming of tropical surf.
Pacifico: for the goofy footers. 1 hour boat ride from Sagana Resort. Long workable left that works on all tides.
